In Counting and Number Systems, we went back to the very beginning of mathematics and talked about different ways to represent positive whole numbers like 1, 2, and 3. As it turns out, there are a lot of other numbers out there besides positive whole numbers. Today, I want to talk about imaginary numbers!

Legend has it that when mathematicians first came up with imaginary numbers, their superstitious contemporaries were frightened enough by the idea to threaten violence. Happily, in modern times imaginary numbers have become widely accepted. They have many practical uses, most notably playing a central role in quantum physics, which underlies all modern electronic technology, from computers to cell phones.
